On the 8th of March 9 students of our Master Program “Petroleum Engineering” (TU Clausthal) went to the DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG. We visited the Production District of Lower Saxony in Langwedel-Holtebüttel. 

Despite the cold weather conditions and the early departure, 8 members were so excited to visit a sour gas treatment plant for the first time, that they became unstoppable. Upon arrival and after a detailed safety instruction, the technical details of the sour gas treatment were explained to us theoretically.

The public keeps questioning how the comparably small amounts of oil mainly produced in northern Germany are being extracted at an economic level. Therefore, some of our SPE student chapter members visited the upstream facilities in and around Barnstorf operated by Wintershall with its high water cuts of up to 98%

On May 31st Wintershall invited us to their Emlichheim facility to get a firsthand look at the production and injection facilities there. They agreed to take 12 students on a tour of the facilities and the field.
